Dates and times are set each year by the organizers, so check before you go. Within a day trip, Boyne City holds a two-day Fourth of July festival with fireworks over Lake Charlevoix.

The Torch Lake sandbar on the Fourth

The Torch Lake sandbar is the place to be on the Fourth, and it's also the busiest it gets all year. If you go:

  • Launch very early. Ramps and parking near the south end fill up fast.
  • Go slow. The sandbar is a no-wake area, and it's crowded with swimmers and anchored boats.
  • Plan your exit. Leaving after the fireworks means a lot of boats moving in the dark. Have working navigation lights, and take it slow.
  • Pick a sober driver. Marine patrols are out in force.

No boat? Watch from shore

Public spots like Alden's waterfront and Torch Lake Township Day Park get crowded, so arrive early. For the Lake Bellaire show, ask locally about the best public viewing spots near Shanty Creek.

Booking tips for the holiday

  • Book lodging months ahead. Fourth of July week is the first week of summer to sell out.
  • Expect minimum stays over the holiday.
  • Reserve boat rentals early. Many companies have no-refund policies for Fourth of July week.
  • Shop before the 3rd. Grocery stores get busy as the holiday approaches.

Where to stay
