Trail season
State-designated trails are open December 1 through March 31. They're groomed when there's enough snow, so early and late in the season, conditions depend on the weather.
Permits and registration
- Trail permit: anyone riding on public trails needs a Michigan snowmobile trail permit. It's valid October 1 through September 30 and is sold online and through DNR license agents and snowmobile dealers. Put the sticker on the front half of the sled, above or below the headlight.
- Registration: snowmobiles must be registered with the Michigan Secretary of State, unless they're used only on private property.
- Out-of-state riders need a Michigan trail permit too.
Check the DNR's permit page for current fees and rules, including safety certificate requirements for younger riders.
Riding tips
- Stay on marked trails. Much of the land along the trails is private.
- Never assume ice is safe. Lakes on the Chain of Lakes can have thin ice, especially near rivers, inlets and the river mouths.
- Ride with a partner and tell someone your route.
- Watch your speed after dark and at road crossings.
Where to check conditions
- The Michigan DNR snowmobiling page for closures and trail updates
- Local snowmobile clubs and trail groomers, which post grooming reports during the season
