Where to stay

Pet-Friendly Bellaire: Bringing Your Dog Up North

Where to stay with your dog, which trails welcome them, and what to know before you pack the leash.

A trip up north is better with the dog. Bellaire has trails, quiet back roads and plenty of fresh air, and a lot of the rules are easy once you know them. Here's what we tell guests who want to bring a pup.

Where to stay with a dog

Of the homes we host, Alm Haus is the one that can welcome pets, with prior permission. Ask us before you book, tell us about your dog, and we'll confirm. It's a renovated chalet about five minutes from Schuss Mountain, it sleeps 12, and it's a good base for trail days at Glacial Hills.

Overlook Bellaire, Northwoods Treehaus, Seven Pines Chalet and White Birch Cabin don't allow pets. If you're comparing options, see our homes compared.

Glacial Hills is our go-to. Its rules say dogs must be leashed at all times, and you can be fined if your dog is off leash. In winter, dogs aren't allowed on the groomed fat-bike or cross-country ski trails, but there's a groomed foot trail from the Vandermark trailhead. More in our Glacial Hills guide.

Grass River Natural Area allows dogs only on the Rail Trail, on a leash. See our Grass River guide.

On the water

Some boat rental companies allow dogs, usually for a fee, and some don't. On Torch Lake, Dockside Water Sports allows dogs on select boats for a $50 fee per dog, up to two. Always ask before you book. See boat rentals on Torch Lake.

Tips for a trip with your dog

  • Bring a long leash and a towel. Trails up here get muddy in spring and after rain.
  • Check for ticks after every hike, especially in late spring and summer.
  • Wear blaze orange in fall, on you and the dog. Fall is also hunting season.
  • Ask before you sit down on a patio. Rules change from place to place.
  • Plan for the heat in July and August. Hike early and bring water.
